The Weather
Mark Twain famously said:
Everyone complains a lot about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it.
This is true. What is also true is that the weather is probably the only thing that people cannot do anything about. The most we can do about disagreeable weather is to accept it as it is. This, however, is not true about virtually everything else in our lives.
Maybe there is something that you think could be better about yourself, your family, your taekwondo school, or your community. The next time that you complain about something, ask yourself if you only complain about it, or do you try to improve upon it.
Maybe you complain that you are not as skilled as you want to be. Do you make a promise to yourself (and keep it) to pay more attention, to train harder, or to train more often?
Perhaps there is something about a particular part of class or our school that you believe could and should be improved upon. Do you complain about it and let it stop there, or do you look first to yourself to figure out if perhaps you may be the problem?
A complaint can be a very useful tool. It can be used to focus on something that needs to be made better. The sad part is that many of us complain and do not take action. This results only in making the thing that needs improving even worse.
So the next time that you complain or someone else complains, call your bluff or their bluff. Challenge yourself and others to improve upon it and not just complain about it. Unless, of course, the complaint is about the weather!
